Wash a Foot this Christmas?

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:14-17)

Jesus Christ set a servanthood example for all those who believe in Him. At the Last Supper Jesus washes the disciples feet to show them how to serve one another. When Jesus goes to wash Peter’s feet he objects and asks: “Lord are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus responds by stating “unless I was you, you have no part with me.” It is not until verses 14-17 that Jesus explains why the foot washing was so important … to teach servanthood. If Jesus their Master washes their feet then the servant role cannot be considered foreign to their own roles as His disciples.

Christmas is almost here! I believe as His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20), the salt and the light of the earth (Matthew 5:13-16), His command to serve one another should be carried out this Christmas in love! We all know people who are less fortunate than us and are in need of a helping hand. For many, Christmas is truly a hard time of year! They see people all around themselves buy expensive gifts that are not always needed or appreciated. This must make them very sad when they themselves often go hungry and miss many meals! This year show the poor of this world that you are Christians by feeding them so that those who have plenty will not have too much and those who have so very little might have something!

If the sinless Christ can wash the sinners feet then why can’t we wash each other’s feet this Christmas?
